The Great Climate March is coming to Scattergood School and Farm, August 21. Dinner with the marchers at 6:30. Come to help; casseroles welcome. Read about the march here: The Great Climate March.

On August 21st, members of the Great March for Climate Action, a group of dedicated individuals undertaking a 3,000-mile journey by foot to Washington, D.C., will march 12 miles from Iowa City to Scattergood Friends School in West Branch for an evening of fellowship, food, farm work, and monarch butterfly habitat renewal.

The marchers and day walkers will gather at College Green Park in Iowa City at 7 am, and hit the road at 7:30, taking a break at EarthSource Gardens, New Pioneer Co-op’s community garden, at Scott Blvd. and Rochester Ave.

The Great March for Climate Action will roll into Scattergood around 3 pm. Marchers will work on the farm from 5-6 pm and then join us for a dinner full of delicious foods from Scattergood’s own organic farm at 6:30.

After dinner, Scattergood will be hosting a very special Monarch Moves event in which the community, the marchers, and the public will join in creating habitat for monarch butterflies on the Scattergood campus. The marchers will depart by sunrise on August 22.

Scattergood Friends School provides amazing academics set in a joyful and intentional learning community with a working organic farm and restored prairie in the greater Iowa City area. Soon to celebrate its 125th year, Scattergood offers college preparatory Quaker education for grades 9-12, boarding and day.

The Great March for Climate Action began on March 1, 2014 in Los Angeles. On any given day, marchers range from ages 3 to 83 and hail from at least 37 different states.

Conflict Transformation Workshop for Youth, August 16 and 17, 2014.
Hosted by Des Moines Valley Friends Meeting. The workshop is part of the nationwide Alternatives to Violence Project (www.avpusa.org), begun by Quaker activists in 1975. We seek high-school age to young adult participants to take part in what promises to be a very worthwhile two-day session.
We hope to find a group of young people of diverse backgrounds who can come together for this event. The potential to impact young people's future through learning the basics of conflict transformation is an opportunity not to be missed.
We are asking for a donation of $10 to offset the cost of lunch and snacks, but we will not turn anyone away who wants to participate. Out-of-town guests will have home-stays available for the night of August 16th. For more information, call 515-250-4272 or visit www.conflicttrans.com/.
